Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors Striving for Historical First

Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors are planning a trip to represent Tulsa at the Henley Royal Regatta in the United Kingdom.  This is the first time in the history of the sport that a high school crew from Oklahoma will be represented at this prestigious event.

The Henley Royal Regatta started in 1839 and is a longstanding tradition in international rowing. Crews from all over the world compete in a head to head knockout race over a five-day period that takes place in first week of July.  In addition to the chance to compete at HRR, the team is also competing at Henley Women’s Regatta, Marlow Regatta and Reading Town Regatta.

The club is working hard at fundraising to make this trip possible. The current fundraising for the trip stands at $20,000. The club would like to raise another $40,000 to help subsidize the trip. The athletes will be taking part in their annual Row-A-Thon fundraiser in late January to do their part to make the trip possible. As part of additional fundraising, the club is also looking to partner with local businesses and provide team-building activities for those employees looking to try the sport for the first time.

“This is an exciting development for the club. We have been working toward this for a few years now. The athletes are fired up and the practice intensity has increased in anticipation for the level of performance we will need in order to race well in the UK.”

The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors has experienced much success this past fall. The team won medals at every event they attended in OKC, Austin and Wichita. The club is actively recruiting high school and 8th grade rowers to be a part of their spring team. For more information, please visit the club’s website at http://www.tulsarowing.org/juniors.

The Tulsa Rowing Club is a 501-C3 non-profit organization serving the Tulsa Area and surrounding counties.
