Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors Wins Medal Haul At The Heart of Texas Regatta

The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors started their spring campaign in fine fashion at the Heart of Texas regatta in Austin, TX this past weekend. The team won a silver medal in the men’s junior lightweight fours, a bronze medal in the men’s junior open weight fours and a bronze medal in the men’s junior lightweight eight.

The four of Antony Vitali (Cascia), Alex Mears (Cascia), Ronnie Baker (Bixby), John Seely (BTW) and Katie Grantham (BTW) rowed a very strong race on Saturday to finish third in the men’s junior open weight fours and went one better by winning the silver medal in the men’s lightweight fours.

The men’s junior lightweight eight consisting of Katie Grantham (Booker T. Washington), John Seely (BTW), Alex Mears (Cascia), Karl Fetsch (Cascia), Mason Fuller (Cascia), Anthony Vitali (Cascia), David Maxwell (Edison), Ronnie Baker (Bixby) and Aaron Pohl (Holland Hall), placed 3rd in a very competitive field.

Tulsa’s men’s junior lightweight B eight worked hard to make the final in the same event. The crew of Garrett Allan (Union), Chris Foley (Jenks), Kelley Flint, (Holland Hall), Walter Davies (BTW), Josiah Grzywacz (Jenks), Nathan Duvall (Edison), Silas Smith (TSAS), John Lohrey (Holland Hall) and Ethan Gonders (Riverfield) placed third in their heat to make it two Tulsa boats in the final.

Cody Shafer (Union) placed 5th in the men’s junior singles and 4th in the open men’s single. In addition, Shafer partnered with Baruch Price (Homeschool) to finish 6th in the final of the men’s junior doubles. Tulsa also placed 4th in the men’s junior open weight four with a crew consisting of Baruch Price (Homeschool), Cody Shafer (Union), Mason Fuller (Cascia), Michael Rose (Holland Hall) and Garrett Allan (Union)

The boys novice four of Walter Davies (BTW), Roby Martin (Holland Hall), Tobe Nightengale (Holland Hall), Valentino Angelini (Jenks) and coxswain Ceili Lawrence (TSAS) also put in a good showing to make the final and place in 6th place.

The girls team are looking forward to some water time and maturing as a team over the course of the rest of the season.

The club placed 1st in the men’s open lightweight, men’s masters lightweight single and placed 2nd in the men’s open singles, the men’s master single, women’s open pair and men’s open double.

“It was a strong performance from our entire team this past weekend. We are excited to get to continue to mature and develop as the season progresses,” said Head Coach Neil Bergenroth. “It’s exciting to watch our team develop depth and deliver a strong performance after all of the hard work everyone has put in.”

The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors will be running summer camps in the month of June for 8th grade and high school athletes looking to try the sport for the first time.
