We Are Hiring Coaches!

Tulsa Youth Rowing Association is seeking coaches, and people with communications experience for its competitive, recreational, and outreach rowing programs. Currently, the organization has about 20 members (recreational and competitive) but will be expanding during the fall to accommodate an increasing interest in this sport and growth in our outreach programs. These positions require a motivated and organized leader who enjoys working with middle school and high school age rowers and can motivate and cooperate with rowers and other coaches.

The amount of time required to fulfill the requirements of the position will vary based on the position but applicants can expect to coach from three to five days per week if hired to coach/support the competitive, recreational, and outreach programs. Applicants seeking to coach the competitive team (novice and/or varsity) should also be prepared to travel with the team on at least three weekends (per school semester) to out-of-town regattas and also attend meetings and various team functions. Various coaching positions (recreational and outreach) can be flexible amounts of time spent depending on job responsibilities

The other position focuses on developing the gROWth program during the week and providing support for communications and marketing efforts to further sustain and grow the club.

Erg Ed and RowingSTEM After School Coordinator.

The Responsibilities and estimated time requirements each week/month for this position are as follows:

  • Support our Erg Ed program in operation in Tulsa Public Schools in Physical Education Classes. Specifically:
  • Coordinate with the TYRA Director of Outreach and Tulsa Public Schools athletic administrative staff to organize the management of the Erg Ed program. This responsibility includes organizing potential field trips for TPS students to visit the boathouse or the rowing tank at the University of Tulsa.
  • Assist Tulsa Public School staff in the identification of students who are interested in taking the next step toward water rowing outside of the Erg Ed program.
  • Visit and support physical education staff each day for five days a week to provide coaching support, and help deliver the curriculum.
  • Provide technical support and rowing machine maintenance for the 20 Concept2 rowing machines. This would include servicing the machines, keeping them in good order, and ordering replacement parts for the machines from Concept2 or consulting with Concept2 on machine maintenance.
  • Ensure that the program has continued support in terms of cleaning materials in the teacher box provided to help support the use of management of machines in schools.
  • Provide logistical, organizational support, and coordination for the transport of machines between partner schools at the end and beginning of each session.
  • Coordinate the administration of post surveys including collection and sending results to the George Pocock Rowing Foundation. (3 hours a month)
  • Collaborate with TYRA communications personnel to ensure a good level of communication occurs about public events or other Erg Ed-related news.
  • Organize/assist with an Erg Ed competition day at the end of the year.
  • Provide coaching support for schools and organizations that would like to visit the facilities at the University of Tulsa rowing tank.
  • Provide support for our RowingSTEM after-school and summer programs. Specifically:
    • Run after-school RowingSTEM programs and/or support faculty at each school. Currently, we have three programs so each program would need 2 hours of support each week.
    • Work with community partners such as the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance to provide professional development for the use and application of our RowingSTEM curriculum for those people involved in teaching the students in our STEM programs.
    • Support recruitment efforts in each of our partner schools which would involve visiting the schools once a month to hand out flyers to promote after-school programming.
    • Support after-school programming by attending professional development offered by partners such as The Opportunity Project when it is offered during the work hours of the day.
  • Assist with the collection of post surveys as part of a feedback loop to ensure continuous improvement of programs and improvements in Erg Ed and STEM programming.
  • Provide organizational administrative and coaching support for 6 weeks of summer camp programming that would involve learning to row on machines and on the water rowing activities.  Each one week camp would run for 2 hours a day each day of the week
  • Coordinate with our partners that provide swimming instruction in order for the students that we work with to have access to swimming lessons as needed to prepare them for on-the-water instruction.

Recreational Head Coach and Communications Director.

The Responsibilities and estimated time requirements each week/month for this position are as follows:

  • Provide organizational support and coaching for two training sessions during the week (4 pm to 6 pm) (one to take place at the University of Tulsa in the rowing tank) and one training session on the water on a Saturday morning.
  • Organize fun, competitive scrimmages at the end of each semester so that the students in our recreational programs can experience racing competitively. (6 hours per semester)
  • Coordinate with schools in our Erg Ed program to facilitate access to the water programs upon completion of their unit of Erg Ed.
  • Work with the club administration to provide marketing and communications support for all of the club programs (Competitive, Recreational, RowingSTEM, and Erg Ed programs). Their responsibilities would be to design various marketing materials and coordinate our social media, digital and physical presence to help promote club activities and initiatives. This will help with recruitment, fundraising, community presence, and accessibility efforts.
  • We would also like to recommend that there be two coaches to assist with the gROWth program. Due to the logistics of the Erg Ed and Afterschool programming, it would not be logistically possible for our RowingSTEM/Erg Ed coach to also work with the recreational program students during the school year. However, it would be possible for this to occur during the summer months.
  • Provide organizational administrative and coaching support for 6 weeks of summer camp programming that would involve learning to row on machines and on the water rowing activities.  Each one-week camp would run for 2 hours a day each day of the week.
