This Fall the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association will offer its non-competitive gROWth program for 7th through 12th-grade students. Participants will learn rowing fundamentals such as safety, basic technique, and boat handling skills while developing strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning.
Land based training takes place on Thursday at the University of Tulsa rowing tank (Tulsa campus) from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. On-the-water training takes place on Saturdays at the University of Tulsa’s boathouse in Catoosa from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. The cost of the program is $375 and will run from Thursday, September 14th to Saturday, November 11th.
In addition to the Thursday and Saturday training, gROWth participants are invited to participate in an optional third practice every Wednesday at Sandusky Avenue Christian Church from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm. The cost of this optional training is an additional $50 for a total of $425.
“Students who join our recreational gROWth program will not only learn the fundamentals of rowing, but they will also build character and confidence as they experience what it takes to participate in the ultimate team sport,” said TYRA Head Coach Tamara Clayton.
All Tulsa Youth Rowing Association coaches have passed background checks through an independent agency.
What Is Rowing?
Rowing requires hard work, discipline, dedication, and teamwork — qualities most of us, as parents, seek to impart upon our kids. Over the years, TYRA has succeeded in teaching youth athletes the merits of unrelenting, exhausting work in a team environment, all while instilling commitment, sacrifice, selflessness, and courage.
This past spring and summer over 50 student athletes tried the sport for the first time. Many will join the competitive team in the fall, and others will enroll in the recreational gROWth program. The competitive team regularly competes on the regional and sometimes national level, and our athletes are also successful in gaining college scholarships at universities all over the U.S.
